5 Week Course for Beginners & Beyond

Etching is an intaglio printmaking technique made traditionally using a metal plate onto which, over a number of stages, the artist’s design is drawn and etched permanently. Ink is applied to the plate and printed using an etching press.

This 5 week course is designed for those with some previous etching experience, who may have projects they would like to pursue and be supported in realising. If new to etching our other 3 week beginner Etching courses are a great first step.

We will provide a thorough refresher on the key skills required for Etching, including how to degrease the plate, apply hard and soft ground to draw onto the plate, etch the plate, file edges, how to ink the plate and then finally how to print. If there is a specific technique you are keen to learn, please let us know in advance.

For the remainder of the course we invite you to pursue your own projects with technical support on hand - throughout the whole session - to offer advice, tips and to help problem solve when things don’t quite go to plan!

This is a chance to expand your printmaking knowledge and build your confidence with the techniques involved in a supportive and professional environment, where you’ll have the freedom to ask questions and try new things. All levels are welcome, although some printmaking experience is needed.

Please note this is self-directed and so no task/project brief is provided. You will need to have a project in mind, or the beginning of one, to make the most of your time on this course.

Groups will be kept small to allow for ample space to make work.

Usva Inei (they/them) is a visual artist and art educator whose practice revolves around etching and linocut. Stemming from their lived experiences as a trans non-binary Russian immigrant, Usva’s work addresses topics of queerness and immigration. In addition to working as an etching technician at Bainbridge Print Studios, Usva regularly teaches etching at Art Academy London, runs etching workshops in various community and youth centres across London, as well as works as a teaching assistant at the Royal Academy of Arts.
